March 2024

March 1st we started off the month getting to watch Lili Booker, our neighbor and basketball extraordinaire, play in the state playoffs.  Lili is such a commanding force on the floor and it was fun to watch.

March 2, Steve went to the flea market in Salisbury with Jerry O'Brien.  They had a great time.  Afterwards they drove down to Rock Hill to look at some tools.  It was a fun-filled day for the two of them.  I went on a walk with Sandra in the morning.  I love or walks and talks.  Afterwards I got to take Anji and her family to look at some houses they might want to rent.  We found a few and Anji was going to look into applying for them.  Back at home I went grocery shopping with Avian.  Steve went to an Elder's Quorum activity that night.

March 5th, Avian was recognized at the LNC board meeting for their gold keys, honorable mention and American Visions nomination.   The Board asked all sorts of questions and it was fun to see Avian engage with them.  They were genuinely interested in what Avian was doing and where they wanted to go to school, etc.  Ms. Matocha also announced that she is entering Avian's oil painting (see below) into the Congressional Award competition.

Award winner - !!!!!!

March 8th, Avian got a package from SCAD.  It was full of SCAD swag as well as a letter notifying Avian that they had won 3rd place in the SCAD challenge.  That is a $2,000 scholarship every year for four years!  The letter also said that there had been over 3,900 entries for the 2-D art.  That is really cool that Avian was #3!  The winning painting is above!

Avian and their SCAD swag!

March 9th we took the train into Uptown to see Avian's art on display at the Mint Museum.  It was a great adventure.  It started on the UNCC Campus for parking and then a short tour while walking to the Traxx station.  Once in Uptown, we found our way to the museum and waited for Nick to arrive.  I wasn't quite prepared for the emotions of seeing Avian's art on the wall in a museum of this size.  It was surreal.

Avian's portfolio

This one is the American Visions Award Nominee.  I also loved taking this picture because several people walked by and did a double-take when they realized that the artist was standing next to the picture.

I HAD to take a picture of the sticker - sooooo cool!

We found a comfy place to sit and just people watch for a bit.  Avian got a kick out of the people walking along, looking at all the pictures and then stopping at one of theirs and talking about how much they liked it.  All the hours of hard work paid off during this time.

We all went to lunch at Chipotle in Uptown and then said goodbye to Nick before heading back to the train.  Once back on campus, Jeremy took us on a tour of where he likes to hang out with his friends.  he also showed us all the cool places in the bookstore.  We found a cool puzzle to send to Grandma for April.

That evening, Steve and I went to the adult session of Stake Conference.  It was a really fun day!

March 10th was the general session of Stake Conference.   At one point the Stake President got up and announced he was going to call some people up randomly to share their testimony, my heart started beating very quickly.  Steve nudged me and said, "You are getting called up", and then they called my name.  I had a few moments to collect my thoughts before it was my turn.  The night before, I had sat down and picked up a book by Barbara Richards (the lady who made our wedding cake) called.  It was about her journey finding joy after becoming paralyzed in a car accident at the age of 20.  She talked about JOY as Jesus Others Yourself which aligns with the greatest commandment to love God first and then others as yourself.  This is what makes joy so much better than happiness.  I was so grateful for the time I had taken to read the night before.  It gave me a basis for my testimony that day.

March 11th was disappointing.  Dr. Vasa was not able to put the new tooth in because the appliance had not been made properly.  They took a physical mold of my mouth and I made an appointment for three weeks out for a second attempt.

March 12th was a teacher work day.  The MTSS team took this opportunity to have Ashley Springs from NCDPI come in and help us facilitate the FAM-S which is a measurement of how well our school is doing with the MTSS implementation.  It was very validating to have the others echo what I had been saying for months.  We now have some very good goals to focus on for improving our MTSS process.

That night Avian got to go be Rose's handler while Rose wore the school mascot uniform.  Apparently you cannot see very well while inside the Knight and need someone to guide you.  They had a great time.

March 14th I went to lunch with Bev.  It was so good to see her and catch up.  She is so happy with her new job and I am really glad that she is doing something she enjoys.  There is also a lot less stress.

That night Rebekah, Nancy and I went to the Reedy Creek Relief Society activity together.  We had a great time playing musical chairs, ping-pong ball tic-tac-toe and pin the Moroni on the temple.  Afterwards, we got to meet Nancy's boyfriend, Miguel.  He is super nice and treats her like a queen.  I love that for her!

March 16th, Avian and Steve went to the UNCG prospective student day on campus.   Avian liked the campus and said it is a good #2 choice if we cannot make SCAD work.  While they went to Greensboro, I went to the Harrisburg Relief Society activity in the morning and got to reconnect with old friends and meet some new people.  I left there to go help set up for the Knight of Shenanigans at Rural Hill.  We got everything set and I went home to get some things done before returning later that night.  It was a fun night filled with talking and laughing and selling band raffle tickets.  I was exhausted at the end of the night and glad to load up the truck and head home.

March 19th was MPA for the band.  I got there in time to watch the entire performance.  It wasn't until halfway through the first song that I remembered to get their performances on video.  The links are below.  They did great!  After their performance, they went into a warm-up room and did the sight reading portion of the adjudication.  This time they came home with a 2 (1 being the best.  It is out of 5 points).

March 20th Steve and I were up bright and early so we could get him to his lithotripsy by 6 am.  Everything went well, according to the doctor's report.  I got Steve home and his stomach was not happy so I left him sleeping while I went to the store to stock up on Sprite and Saltines.  He was feeling better when I got back.

That night was really rough.  He didn't sleep much as was having A LOT of discomfort.  He was also peeing blood again.  I told him he needed to call the doctor first thing in the morning.  I left to go do a half day at work but told him to call me if he needed me to come home.  He called me about 9 to tell me that he had passed a lot of "schrapnel" and was feeling a lot better.  I came home at 11:30 and we headed out at 1:45 to get Avian so we could go meet with their SCAD counselor in South Charlotte.  It was nice to get to meet Sylvia in person and talk over Avian's options.  While we were sitting there talking, Avian mentioned the gold keys from Scholastic and Sylvia said that a gold key was worth $4,000 in scholarship money.  Also, Avian's AP classes would make it so Avian would be able to get their scientific illustration minor without adding any time on to their time at SCAD - 5 AP classes in exchange for 5 minor credit hours.  Sylvia also gave Avian some tips on putting together a portfolio and getting a resume written up.  We feel really good about Avian getting to go to SCAD.  We are hopeful that things are going to work out.

March 23rd I woke in the morning and helped Anji get her apartment cleaned out.  Steve and I went to Karina and Zach's wedding in the afternoon and then I went back to Anji's to get some more carpet cleaning done.  Steve came to help because there was a possibility that I would have to drive Anji and her family to the Greyhound Bus Station as their departure time had been delayed.  We got everything cleaned up and then decided to go to dinner.  After dinner, we went and visited another friend who was in the hospital.  Avian was at a friend's birthday party and Jeremy was at a robotics competition on campus.

March 24th we got a new bishopric at church.  Bishop Arias has served the ward well for the last 5 1/2 years.  Bishop Romney will be amazing!

After our sacrament meeting, I went to the Reedy Creek ward conference with Nancy.  Once at home, Steve and I went to Anji's storage unit to drop off a few items that got left behind.  Then it was time to relax!!

March 28th, I got home from work and edged the lawn so Steve could mow.  While he mowed, I pulled some weeds and got the front gardens looking a lot better.

March 29th was a remote day for school (and the beginning of Spring Break!!).  After I signed off my computer for the day, Jeremy, Avian and I went to Kohls to get Jeremy some denim without holes!!

March 30th, Steve and I were up at 4:30 to go to the temple. It was nice to be in the temple the day before Easter.  Since we were able to get into the 8:00 a.m. session, we were home by 1:00 p.m.  That gave us some time to get some projects done in the yard.  Avian finished up another piece for a scholarship and Jeremy hosted another E-sports event on campus.  It was a full day.

March 31st - HAPPY EASTER!!!  We got to talk to Mom and Kathy and Nick came over for dinner.  It was a great way to end a busy month!

February 2024

February  was a month full of activity.

February 5th was Nick's last night at our house.  He was all packed up and ready to move into his new apartment at the end of the week.  He and Seth were meeting at the apartment after work on February 6th to get the keys to their new place.  Nick borrowed our blow-up mattress to serve as his bed until we got his furniture moved in.  He was so excited.

February 6th Steve and I packed up Nick's refrigerated items and his mini-fridge and took them to his new place.  It is really nice and so close to his work.  It only takes him 15 minutes to get to work now instead of 35.  He took us on a tour and it was fun to see where he would be living.

February 7th, I was in the hallway talking to some teachers when Shannon Stein, our superintendent, came over and congratulated me on Avian's Scholastic awards.  She told me that Avian is only the second student in LNC history to get a gold on their portfolio.  When I let Avian know later that night, they were blown away and even more excited!

Jeremy got home late that night.  He was in low spirits because the E-sports team had to fire one of their coaches for doing unethical things during the most recent competition.   He knew it had to be done, but he still didn't like doing it.

February 9th!!  Official Moving Day!  We got all the big stuff movcd in and set up and were done by 3.  He now had a real bed to sleep on instead of a mattress that keeps deflating.

February 10th we got his shelves and little things moved to his new place.  Steve helped hand the shelves on the wall and I helped organize and get things put away.  Nick also went and bought a television and microwave for his new place.  He is getting it all set up just he way he likes it.

Setting up his Transformers Shrine.

February 11th was Superbowl Sunday and Nick's birthday.  He wanted to have his party at our house because there was still nowhere for everyone to sit at his new place.  We made Philly Cheesesteak sandwiches and watched the game.  Devan made her famous crumb cake and we sang Happy Birthday just after the half-time show for those who needed to leave. It was a fun evening!  Nick is 22, WEIRD!!

February 12th, The Biscuit, a local Charlotte Newsletter, is going to do a feature article on Avian.  They chose Avian's portfolio as their winner.  So exciting.

February 14th I woke up to low water pressure and no hot water.  When I got downstairs I heard water running and KNEW that I would find a flooded garage.  YUP!  The water heater hose had burst and there was water spewing everywhere.  Avian ran and got Steve and I started moving vehicles so we could get to the water main and shut it off.  I ran around the house putting reminders not to flush toilets or run water.  When I called my boss to explain the situation, she told me to just take the day off and get everything settled.

Once we assessed the damage, we found that it was not as bad as we had initially thought.  There had been a lot of water spewing everywhere, but it had been coming from a relatively small source.  The drywall was not soaked and would dry out on its own.  Steve's drill press and bandsaw had taken the brunt of the water and had spared the freezer.  As it turned out, they were not ruined.  Steve was able to get them cleaned and dried.  We were able to get a hold of our plumber who was going to take a day off his current job and come help us with our situation.  While we waited for Lane to come and take measurements and make a list of needed parts, we took the hanging shelf down so we would have better access to the corner.  We also moved shelves and checked for additional water damage.  When we went to Lowe's to pick up the new water heater, it was the last one they had in stock!!  By the end of the day we were back up and running.  We were very lucky!!

So much stuff and we didn't lose a whole lot.

Valentine's Day Epiphany - God's Love is REAL!!
  • No damage to the house or Steve's tools
  • A boss who understands
  • Co-workers who filled in for me
  • A plumber who made himself available
  • A water heater in stock
  • Weather that was decently warm
  • A hard-working hubby
  • Peace in all the turmoil
  • Money in savings
  • Hot water by that evening
And the daffodils started blooming!!

During all the ruckus, Jeremy and I had time to look for Rodney.  LNC needed him for a play they are doing.  Rodney gets to be out and see more of the world for a little bit.

A very appropriate sign for a middle school.

February 17th we all went to Mr. Tokyo's for dinner to celebrate Jeremy's birthday.  We had to wait for an hour (no surprise there!!) so Steve and Nick went to Target to get a fry cutter for Nick while Jeremy, Avian and I stayed around to hold our spot in line.  They got back just in time.  We had a yummy dinner and then went back to the house for presents and cheesecake.  Jeremy is 25.  WEIRD!!

Sunday, February 18th, Steve and I were walking into church at the same time as the Bryant's.  Sam Bryant came running up to Steve and yelled "Grandpa!"  Steve was grinning from ear to ear.

Monday, February 19th.  Jeremy is officially 26!!  I was also fit for my new tooth.

LNC did a spotlight of all the different teams that help support LNC and make it great.  I was included in the Tech Team.  We took this fun picture as part of our spotlight.  I love the people with whom I work!
Starting with me and going clockwise:
Me, Marianne, Shelly, Cindy, Brandon, Aissatou, Jamie

Our amazing PTO arranges for periodic lunches to let the staff know they are appreciated.  Me and Melissa Boone goofing off for the camera.

February 22nd, I drove Avian to the school so they could get on the bus with their fellow seniors and head to Universal Studios!!  This is such a fun group of kids.
One of the teachers took this and sent it to me.

February 24th was a busy day!  I got all the plants repotted and the RS Women's Conference posters printed.  Avian freaked me out while I was waiting in line by calling me from Florida.  They were trying to decide if they wanted to buy a sweatshirt as a souvenir and wanted my opinion (and for me to go in on the sweatshirt with them).  We decided it was a good buy and would be a fun memento of their trip.  They were having a great time!

That afternoon, Nick called and said that his feet were swollen.  We told him to lay down with his feet up and we would be there soon.  When we got there, his feet were really swollen and he sounded even worse in person than on the phone.  Steve and I went to the store to get him some medicine and first aid stuff as well as some dinner.  We got him all settled in for the night with some Benedryl in his system.

Jeremy came home exhausted, but with a smile on his face.  He had hosted another successful event on campus.  I am so proud of him.

February 25th, Avian is home and had an amazing time.  I am so glad they were able to go on this trip with their friends who they have been in school with since at least 5th grade.  It really is a great group of kids.  Nick called and said that is feet were better but now his hands were swollen.  We told him to take some more Benedryl and watch it.  I went to the Albemarle ward conference and had a great time getting to know the ladies in that ward.  Back at home Nick called and now his lip was swollen.  I told him to watch it closely!!  I told him if he woke up in the middle of the night and his face was more swollen to go immediately to the nearest ER and then call us.  He agreed.

February 26th, Nick called first thing in the morning and said he was on his way to the Urgent Care.  His lips were more swollen and his eyes were swollen as well.  They took one look at him and sent him to the Emergency Room.  He called me again, scared, from the ER waiting room. I asked him if he had seen a triage nurse and he said yes.  I told him that if they sent him back to the waiting room then he was not in immediate danger.  He did not understand why the Urgent Care had sent him to the ER.  I told him that facial swelling could get bad fast and to stay where he was.  He called me an hour later and let me know that he had seen the doctor and was given a prescription for steroids to help with the swelling.

As if this was not enough excitement for the day, I let Avian sleep in and get to school late, in time for the serious, academic classes.  They had been in the school for maybe 15 minutes when everyone was evacuated to the gym because of a bomb threat.  They stayed there for an hour while the bomb squad swept the school.  They were allowed to go back to their classes shortly after the school was cleared.

February 27th, Nick called to say he was feeling MUCH better and the swelling had come down a lot.  Steve called a little bit later asking about another bomb threat at the school.  I walked out of my office into a completely empty Media Center which should have been crawling with 7th graders working on projects.  I walked into the completely empty halls and out the doors of the school.  There were several police officers standing in the parking lot.  One of them approached me and asked where I had just come from.  I explained that I was in my office with the door closed and didn't hear the announcement to evacuate.  It was funny, not funny, but I did chuckle.  Let's just say that the tech team is looking into getting speakers put into the digital citizenship room and my office so we can hear any announcements in the future.

February 29th, Steve and I had our taxed done.  Afterwards, we went back to the high school to watch Avian, and the band, perform in a mock MPA in preparation for the real competition.  Mr. Reavis had gotten three of this music teacher friends to come and judge so they would know what to work on for the real thing.
Sitting quietly between numbers.

It was a fun month with a lot of excitement and spring is almost here!!
