August 2017

August 6th Steve, Nick and I drove to South Carolina to get some peaches.  Naomi and Jeremy stayed home to recuperate from the cruise.  I love the drive down to the peach farm.  It is really pretty and relaxing.

Our favorite bushes...

...full of butterflies.

Homemade peach ice cream and old fashioned rockers on the front porch of the store.  This is also a huge part of the tradition.

When we got back from our mini road trip we all went to the pool to just laze around while we still had time.  It would be back to school and work all too soon.

August 7th a hurricane slammed into Mexico right where we had been just a few days before.  WHOA!!

August 8th Nick decided to go on a bike ride.  Several hours later he called to let me know he was okay and would be home in a bit.  When he got home, we mapped out the route he took - 32 miles!!!

That night, for Young Women, we did string art.  The girls had a great time and by the end of the night they all had a Salt Lake Temple to display at home.

August 9th was distribution day for Lake Norman Charter.  Naomi was so excited to get her schedule and see her friends.  She spent the whole time running around greeting everyone.  She has some amazing teachers this year.  Over at the high school we got Nick's schedule and he freaked out a little bit.  Somehow he was signed up for English 3 Honors.  That is a Junior level class.  A quick visit to Mr. Funchess' office (he is the new vice principal) and we had it all straightened out.  The English 3 was supposed to be French 3.  It all worked out and Nick was eventually excited about his schedule as well.  We dropped Nick off at home and I took Naomi to her eye doctor appointment.  It was an expensive visit.  Naomi needed new glasses and Nick had run out of contacts.

Back at home, Nick was waiting to go to Matt's house.  A group of youth from his church were going to play on Lake Norman and Matt had invited Nick to come along.  They had a great time.

Naomi and I went home to mow the lawn and chill by the pool.

August 11th Nick was officially diagnosed with a sinus infection.  He had been battling a stuffy nose since the cruise and it finally turned for the worse.  We got him on some antibiotics and he should be feeling a lot better before school starts.

That evening, Steve had another of his scouts advance to Eagle.

August 12th I had an all-day seminary training.  We learned so much and I felt a little more confident that I might be able to handle all the aspects of early-morning seminary.  Brother Shurtleff, my seminary teacher from Brighton High School, had just retired as the district supervisor for the Church Education System the month before.  We met his replacement at this training.  I was so sorry I missed Bro. Shurtleff by such a short amount of time.  He was one of my favorite seminary teachers from high school.  I will never forget the day he got in his rameumptom to pray and ripped his pants.  It was so funny.

August 14th I can't remember where we were, but I do remember having to make a mad dash for cover when the clouds opened up and poured down rain.  The mad dash must have dislodged some of the remaining kidney stones because when we got home Steve passed a 6 mm stone.  The next morning he passed five more.  Woohoo!

August 16th was Jeremy's first day of classes at CPCC.  I can't believe my baby is in college!

My handsome college Freshman.

August 17th was the first day of school for Lake Norman Charter.  One of the teacher's had a family emergency and I ended up substitute teaching the first day of school.  It was fun to see everyone all dressed up in their new school clothes.

Nick is a sophomore and Naomi is in 6th grade.
August 19th Steve and Nick joined the Outdoor Club for some Ultimate Frisbee.  They had a great time and Nick wants to join the club.  YAY!

After they got home we all went down to the Reedy Creek Park for the annual hummingbird festival.  The kids favorite part is watching the volunteers catch and tag the hummingbirds.

They gather data, weigh the birds, tag them...

...show them off to the crowd...

...and then let someone hold and release the hummingbird (for a small donation to the cause). One year Naomi is going to get to do this.  She is determined.  Apparently, you have to get there early and get on the list in order to release a bird.
August 20th I was released from Young Women.   It was a tough day.  I didn't know what to do with myself during third hour.  Relief Society was really foreign to me.   For the last 11 years I have had a calling which has kept me busy during the third hour.  Needless to say, this is going to take some getting used to.

August 21st I got the kids out of school early to watch the eclipse at home.  We had a couple pairs of glasses I had purchased from the eye doctor (so I knew they were safe).  We took turns using the glasses to watch as the sun covered the moon.  It was so cool.  We even rigged up a cover for the camera lense so we could take some pictures.

It looks like the moon but it is really the sun.

Almost a full eclipse.

The boys sharing a pair of glasses.  I don't know if that was safe, but they were having fun...and they can still see, so...

Naomi checking it out.

Chillin' and viewin'

Just after the almost complete eclipse.  It was so cool.
August 22nd was the end-of-the-year pool party at the Richardson's.  Every year the youth descend upon their house and have a blast in their pool.  This year was no exception.   The boys got into a belly flop contest and practiced diving like different animals.  It was so much fun to watch.

Nick doing his whale dive.

Belly flop anticipation face.

It was a flat belly flop heard around the neighborhood.  OUCH!
August 24th I met with Fernanda and handed over all the materials she would need as the new second counselor in the Young Women presidency.  It was a huge relief.  I could now concentrate on being a seminary teacher full time.

August 25th I got to sub for Mrs. Jackson.  Eight grade science is so much fun.  That night the boys went camping while Naomi and I stayed home and chilled.  I had managed to loose my voice shortly after school let out and I needed to have some down time.

August 26th was Skills Day for AYSO.  Naomi got to meet all the kids in the U14 Coed division.  The coaches ran them through several different skills and then divided them up into teams.  It was nerve-wracking, but fun.

Skills Day for AYSO.
After Skills Day, Naomi and I did a little bit of shopping for things she didn't know she needed for school and then she had Monica's birthday party that night.  Anytime you get be with your friends, eat pizza and swim in a pool it is a good day.

The whole church gang (Beehives and Deacons - they call themselves the Bee-cons)

Happy Birthday, Monica!!
August 27th I stayed home from church with a very sore throat.  Happy 24th Anniversary to us!!  Laura called and told me Mom was in the hospital.  She had had a "heart incident".  The doctors weren't calling it a heart attack but that was the closest thing to the truth.  She was stabilized and doing okay, but they were keeping her for observation.

August 28th was the first day of seminary.  I think it went as well as could be expected.  I was so nervous but the kids were great.  Everyone was on time and they all stayed awake.  I know that won't last, but it was nice for one day.

Jeremy had a job interview at Books A Million.  It was nice to see him come home from the interview so positive and confident.

Naomi finally convinced me to let her shave her legs.  ALL her friends are shaving and she feels so hairy next to them.  She was so excited!!!

Growing up WAAAAYYYY too fast.

After her adventure with the razor we ran to clarinet lesson and then to her first soccer practice.  Her team name is the "Dragons".  Her coach is super nice as well.

August 29th I spent the whole day with Kellie Miller getting the Young Women slide show all put together.  This year's slide show was the best one so far!!

Jeremy found out he got the job and just needed to pass the background check.  He was so excited.

August 30th I ended up at Urgent Care.  My sinus infection was so massive the doctor immediately put me on steroids and an antibiotic to get rid of the swelling and infection.

August 31st - Jeremy  was officially hired at Books A Million.

True words.  I found this on our mechanic's desk.  Love it!!
