February 2018

February 2nd we had a Seminary Superbowl.  It was so much fun.  The kids really got into it.  I like having fun ways to reinforce that they ARE learning something in seminary.  That night we fed the Elders.  With Jeremy getting so close to putting in his papers I love feeding the missionaries and having them get Jeremy excited about the whole process.  

January 4th was the greatest Superbowl EVER!!!!  The Patriots were favored to win in almost all the scenarios put out there, but the Eagles came back and stole the prize in the last few minutes of the game!!!!!  SO worth being exhausted on Monday.  41-33!!!

February 10th Bradden and Hyrum came and stayed with us to celebrate Nick's and Hy's birthdays and to get a really cool Pinewood Derby car put together for Hyrum.  We had birthday rootbeer floats and watched the opening ceremony of the Olympics.

February 11th, Nick turned 16 and was so sick.  He stayed home from church to recuperate and to enjoy some peace and quiet.  Poor kid.  He did get out of bed long enough to have some cheesecake and open presents.

February 14th President Davis came to my seminary class to observe.  This made me really nervous.  As ironic luck would have it the chastity lesson (Alma 39) fell on Valentine's Day AND the day President Davis decided to visit.  It all turned out okay.  I was able to incorporate a good chunk of the talk Elder Christofferson  gave on moral relativism and how the world wants us to believe one thing about love and sex, but the Lord has a plan that has never, nor will ever change.  I used candy hearts to illustrate how the world feels about love and them refuted all that with scriptures from Alma 39.  It turned about really well and the kids loved having President Davis join us.

February 16th Naomi scored a basket during her game.  She was ecstatic and surprised at the same time.  Nick was in bed by 6 that night!!???!!!  Growth spurt??!!!?? Not feeling well??!!??  It is anybody's guess at this point.  Poor kid.  It has been a tough month for him.

February 19, Jeremy is 19.  Where did the time go?  We had Justin and Sidney over for dinner on Sunday the 18th and celebrated with dinner and cheesecake a day early since Jeremy had class on his birthday night.

On the 19th Naomi and I got to go to one of Kaylee's concerts.  She had tried out for an area orchestra and was their star oboe player.  Naomi is really liking the idea of learning to play the oboe and this concert really lit a fire underneath her.

The Olympics have been really exciting this time.  I love that the world gets together and cheers for the world.  There have been several countries that have never gotten the gold before that were making a name for themselves this year.  I love sports and how they can bring people together.  So much fun to watch.

February 23rd Naomi and I got to go support Monica in her school play.  Quite a few of the Young Women were there.  I love this group of girls.

February 24th the Licastris came for dinner.  Bella and Naomi are really good friends from school.  Bella invited Naomi to go to the beach with her family over Spring Break this year, but Steve and I wanted to meet her parents before we said "yes.".  We had such a fun night getting to know them better and, of course, said YES by the end of the night.  Naomi and Bella were thrilled and excited and surprised and overjoyed and.....

February 25th, Nick was ordained to the office of a Priest in the Aaronic Priesthood.  My babies are growing up.

February 27th we had our taxes done.  It was a long day with seminary and work and taxes, but it was worth it.

February 28th was a big day as well.  I was substituting for Mrs. Hammond and we had just come in from recess.  I was watching the kids in the hallway as there were several 6th graders going to their lockers right outside my room and I wanted to make sure they didn't bother the 5th graders when I heard a commotion in the room.  I turned around to see one boy on the back of another pummeling his face.  I pulled them apart and escorted both of them out into the hallway to find out why.  They insisted on talking over each other and not letting the other one talk so I separated them further and got the team lead.  My class had to write down what they saw and turn it in to the vice principal.  I wrote down my account of the incident as well.  Neither boy returned to class that afternoon.

On a brighter note, Nick graduated from physical therapy and only has to go back if the problem resurfaces.  I am excited because I don't have to drive to almost South Carolina anymore in rush hour traffic.  Also, that night, Tanner Polera brought their new puppy over to visit.  Felix Polera is a dachshund/chiuaua mix and is the cutest little ball of fur!!!!

We also started on Nick's Eagle project!!!  Last Eagle project for our family.  I am a little excited, I won't lie about it.  So proud of these kids. 

January 2018

January was a very busy way to start 2018 so we decided to spend the first day sleeping in and taking it easy.  

January 2, Steve and I took Nick to see Dr. Bradberry.  Nick had been complaining about a sore shoulder for months and I just didn't have the head room to think about HIS shoulder while dealing with Steve's.  I know, bad mom!  Dr. Bradberry did an exam and took a couple of x-rays.  Nick has a shoulder structure abnormality that is cause part of the pain.  Where the ball of the humerus fits into the socket of the scapula should be rounded in order to fit as a ball and socket joint.  Nick's is flat.  Dr. Bradberry said that this has only recently become a problem because Nick has only been working his chest muscles and not paying as much attention to his back muscles.  Dr. Bradberry did some manipulation and then sent Nick to physical therapy to get some back exercises to correct the problem.  It is good to have an answer and such an easy solution to the problem.  

January 6th was the first basketball game for the young women.  They did as well as can be expected for a group of young ladies who really haven't played before and haven't had a lot of time to practice.  

January 9th I didn't have to work.  I had a long list of things that needed to get done, but I spent the morning talking with Jeremy instead.  Since he started working and going to college we don't see him as much.  He had a lot of questions about the gospel and the culture of the church.  His misconception was that they are one in the same.  We talked and I helped him separate out what is part of the gospel of Jesus Christ and what is Mormon culture.  He felt a lot better after clearing that up. 

New Beginnings was that night.  The girls had a grand time presenting their skit and showing off what they had been working on all year long as well as welcoming in the new Beehives for the year. 

New Beginnings was a BOOT camp theme this year.  So much fun.  

 January 10th Steve started physical therapy.  Getting his range of motion back is going to be a challenge, but he is up for it.    Also of note, Naomi won her class Geography Bee. 

January 11th we found out that Jeremy made the Dean's List at CPCC.  Way to go, Jeremy!

January 15th there was no seminary and no school because of Martin Luther King Day.  We all got to sleep in!!!!  I went to lunch with Sandra, did  some grocery shopping and got a bunch of stuff done. 

January 16th - I thought it would be a good time to review the objectives of Seminary and get the kids refocused on what their role was in daily seminary.  I had them come up with goals for themselves for the second half of the year and even got some good insight about how to better teach the lessons.  Steve and I went to lunch at Mr. Tokyo that afternoon.  It was amazing.  About dinner time I got the message that school was being cancelled for the next day due to a huge snow storm that was heading straight for us.  AWESOME!!!!!!

January 17th it snowed ALL day long!!  No school again the 18th and 19th as well.  It really was a doozy of a storm.  I am not complaining at all.  It gave me a chance to regroup, recenter and get some much needed cleaning done.  We all took some time to play in the snow as well.

January 20th we had thawed out enough to get to the church for basketball.  It was a fun day of games.

January 23rd I got to spend the better part of the day with my friend, Charlotte.  She and I found out early that we share of love of rubber stamps.  The day was glorious and filled with creativity, stamps and NO kids.  It was heavenly. 

January 24th Nick  had four cavities at his dentist appointment.  Thank you to Dr. Neidan for helping me FINALLY convince Nick that candy and Gatorade should be used sparingly. 

January 25th, Naomi was in the school Geography Bee.  She took second place!!! 

Meanwhile, Jeremy drove Nick to the Outdoor Club rock climbing activity.  They had a really good time.  As if that were not enough excitement for one day, Steve was officially cleared to not have to wear his sling 24/7 and it was the Daddy Daughter dance that night.  Steve and Naomi had a great time dancing and talking with friends. 

The dance had a tropical theme this year.  

January 26th Dr. Bradberry said that Nick's shoulder is doing much better and we can go to monthly appointments instead of twice a week.  He needs to keep up on his physical therapy exercises though.    That night was a seminary teacher dinner and fireside with Elder Christofferson.  He talked about moral relativism and how we are shifting away from the standards God has set for his people.  It was a great talk and gave all of us a lot to think about. 

January 27th Nick and Steve were finally able to start on Nick's Eagle project.  Nick has been chomping at the bit to get started but we had to wait for Steve's shoulder to heal a little bit before he could attempt this level of physical activity.  Both of them were happy campers!

January 29th, Nick had two of his cavities filled.  We are going to have to go back and have the two on the other side done next week.  Dr. Neidan doesn't like to numb both sides unless it is an emergency.  Bummer, but I understand.  When we got home I crashed HARD on the couch.  By the time Steve got home that night I was so sick I couldn't get off the couch.  He called everyone in my seminary class and cancelled for the following day. 

January 30th I used as a recovery day to the max.  I didn't do anything but sleep and get feeling better, until that night when I was the photographer for the LNC winter band performance.  Kaylee came to support Naomi and to be a proud teacher when her pupil got to play with the 6th and 7th grade bands. 

Naomi is playing with the 7th grade band.  Mr. Scaringelli is so impressed with her ability to play the clarinet that he has challenged her to think about playing the oboe as well. 

December 2017

December 5th Steve had his pre-op visit.  Since we had already met all our deductibles for the year because of the the kidney stones, we opted to rush the surgery and get it done in 2017, which meant not doing much of anything over the Christmas break.  After Steve's appointment, we went to the post office and got all the Christmas packages mailed off.  

December 6th I got to sub for Mrs. Herron in the library at the elementary school.  It was a fun day, but I was completely exhausted by the end of the day.  Those kids are high energy.

December 7th we almost hit a deer on the way to school.  I  missed it by inches.  It wasn't so lucky in the other lane.  A huge Duke Power truck hit it with the big winch set on the front of the truck.  Naomi was really upset to see the dead deer.  It really shook us all up.  

I can't remember exactly what night this happened, but it was a fun night with the Relief Society sisters in our ward.  They are all so much fun.  

December 9th was a fun day.  It snowed a little bit!  I got to eat cheesecake and shop at Charming Charlies.  I found the perfect purse for me.

December 14th Steve had surgery on his shoulder.  We had to be to the hospital by 9 a.m. so we dropped the kids off at school and headed straight down to the hospital.  It was a long day of waiting.  I ran a few errands since we were so close to the Scout Shop and some other stores that had things we needed to finish our Christmas shopping.  For the most part I sat in the waiting room and prepared my seminary lessons for the next couple of days.  He came out of surgery about 3 and was in recovery until about 5.  We finally got home about 6:30.  He was still feeling pretty good as the nerve block hadn't worn off yet.  The nurses warned me to keep him drugged up because when the nerve block wore off the pain might be hard to manage.  They were not kidding!!!!  About 11 o'clock the next morning the nerve block was gone and he was in excruciating pain.  It was a rough 48 hours after that, but we made it through.  I was supposed to volunteer some time at the school but ended up pulling Naomi early so I could get back to Steve.  Jeremy had picked Nick up earlier in the day for me so I didn't have to leave his dad.  I knew it would be somewhat painful and uncomfortable, but I wasn't prepared for this level of pain.  I didn't dare leave him it was so severe.   I called Brother Croshaw to come and give him a blessing which seemed to calm him down and then the nurse FINALLY called back and I had the answer on how to rotate his pain meds for better pain management.

The ice machine really helped with the pain.  It was down to a matter of finding a comfortable position.  

December 16th the CPM machine arrived.  This was to help him passively move the arm and start getting some range of motion in order to prevent scar tissue.  It was painful, but necessary.  We would get him strapped into the chair, turn it on and let it go for about 30 minutes three times a day.  By the time he got to physical therapy his range of motion was looking really good.  The chair helped shorten his time in PT.  

Since Steve was finally not in so much pain I was able to leave him for a short time and do some Christmas shopping with Naomi and Jeremy.  Nick held down the fort while we were gone.  

The Torture Chair - once Steve was strapped in I would hurry and take my shower and do a few things that needed to get done because it was a guaranteed 45 minutes that Steve would not really need much from me.  The kids laughed at me and I told them this is what it was like what they went down for a nap when they were little.  

December 17th, Steve made it through Sacrament Meeting on Sunday and then we had to get him back home again.  

December 19th Naomi got to bring Hogan, the sixth grade snake, home for winter break.  Her band teacher also challenged her to learn a new instrument and send a bass clarinet home from the break for her to play around with and see if she liked playing it.  Steve and I also made a quick trip to the mall to find a wedgie pillow which would hopefully help him sleep better (or sleep at all for that matter).  IT WORKED!!!!  He only woke up once to take more pain medicine.  I LOVED A FULL NIGHT'S SLEEP.  Needless to say, I was much more patient with everyone the next morning.  Keep in mind I still had seminary every morning until December 20th.  It was rough, but we made it.  

We really liked having Hogan around for the holidays.  

December 20th, Nick took his last midterm and was done with school at 9:30 a.m.  Steve wanted to try driving since he had stopped taking the narcotics and was feeling more independent.  He did a reasonable job, but the brace made it slightly uncomfortable with the center console moving his shoulder into a weird position.  Once we figured that out it was not so bad.    I went back over at 11:30 and got Naomi.  WINTER BREAK WAS FINALLY HERE!!!

December 21st we spend the day cleaning and doing the grocery shopping.  One of the kids would stay home with Steve while myself and the others would run errands.  Steve was doing much better and wanted to have some errands of his own.  We ended up with a nail in the tire of the truck and he took it over to the tire place to have it fixed.  He felt like a new man off doing something on his own. 

December 22nd, I finished all the holiday shopping with the kids.  Jeremy found the best ugly Christmas sweater.  He loved wearing it to work the next couple of days.   That night, Nick fixed dinner and Jeremy got to spend some time with all his high school friends who were home from college for the holidays.  Steve went to see Kev perform.  I felt like I have the night off.  It was weird not having to run somewhere to help someone with something.  I read a book.

December 23rd we took the whole family to see the new Star Wars movie.  It was fun to have some time to do something as a family.  

December 24th was sacrament meeting only.  When we got home we found that the snake light had gone out.  Hogan needed that light to regulate his body temperature.  Steve and Naomi made an emergency trip to the pet store before it closed for another light.   I stayed home and fixed the chicken cordon blue for dinner.  After dinner we went to deliver some homemade caramel corn to the Muller family.  I love visiting their home.  They are always doing something fun and are so inviting.    Back home we watched the David Archuleta and Mormon Tabernacle Choir DVD.  When the camera was panning the audience we had to stop it and double check something.  Derran and Sarah were at that concert and were on the DVD.  Too cool.  

December 25th we were up early.  Breakfast was a build-your-own omelette bar.  They loved the new tradition.  We also had the sweet rolls, but they were later in the day so I didn't have to be up at the crack of dawn to get them done. It was a really chill day.  

My friend makes these amazing dolls.  I asked her if she could do a Bob Ross doll for Naomi.

We got one for Steve since it was one of the only chairs in the house where he could be comfortable.  I love things that help him be more comfortable.  

Naomi got Amazon money from her cousin and promptly ordered a digital drawing pad.  She has always wanted to try digital art.  

December 27th we took Nick to see Dr. Bradberry about his sore shoulder.   It turns out that Nick has an impingement and shoulder tendinitis.  We have him set up for a series of appointments for adjustments and PT exercises to help with the pain.  

Jeremy came home from work all worried about his first encounter with work politics and the games that his fellow employees like to play from time to time.  He handled it really well, though.  I am proud of him.  

December 28th we had another doctor's appointment for Steve as a follow-up to his surgery.  His shoulder is getting better and he no longer has to wear the pillow part of his sling.  He was so excited about this little thing because it was the pillow that was causing so much of the discomfort.  

December 30th I finally cleaned the living room carpet.  It was getting really disgusting with all the traffic from seminary.  Naomi and I took a break and went to see The Greatest Showman with Laura and Monica Arias and Abby.  We loved it and want to go see it again already.  Back at home Naomi I were able to just chill and read.  The boys were out pricing computers for Jeremy.  His old computer was no longer adequate for what he needs to get done for school.  He told Naomi she could buy his old computer off of him when his new computer arrived.  I was thrilled by this because Naomi was using my computer for her digital art, which meant I did not have access to it for balancing the checkbook, doing seminary stuff, updating the blog....

December 31st we still made Chinese food but only enough to feed our family.  We made it a low-key night because we didn't know how Steve would be feeling.  Maybe we will do a big party next year.  

November 2017

November started out with me having to talk to one of our new neighbors about his waaaaay too fast driving habits.  All the kids were out playing basketball in the driveway across the street when he came screaming around the corner.  Luckily the ball had not bounced into the street as it had frequently been doing throughout their game, or one of the kids might have been hit.  I took off running after the car down the street and waited for the person to get out of their car once they pulled into their driveway.  I was nice, but firm, and told the young man that there were frequently children playing on that corner and he needed to slow down when entering the neighborhood.   He apologized and then went in the house.  I turned around and all the neighborhood kids were standing at the top of the hill watching.  When I got to them I said, "You guys are really sweet to come and make sure I was okay while talking to him."  They all laughed and then one of them said, "No, we wanted to see you let him have it!"   I guess I have developed a reputation for being the protector of the kids.  For the record, the worst I have done is yell at a person who was being creepy (staring and smiling a creepy smile while watching them play) around the kids and asked him to leave the neighborhood before I called the cops.  (It was creepy ice-cream truck guy and we haven't seen him since that day).  

Naomi thought the moon was really pretty. She is studying the phases of the moon at school and is super interested in all things space right now.  

November 4th was the last soccer game of the season.  It was a fun season.  Naomi learned a lot and playing on a co-ed team made her a better player.

November 7th, Naomi was in charge of teaching the Activity Girls.  She chose to do a drawing class.  She gave each girl a piece of paper and taught them how to draw a basic face.  The girls loved learning a new skill.  Naomi is a natural teacher.

November 8th, Steve finally gave up and went to the regular doctor because his ear was still really hurting.  He whole ear was really swollen.  That can't be good.  Well, it turns out that the Minute Clinic gave him the wrong antibiotic and was was just an out ear infection was now a raging out and inner ear infection.  His ear was basically swollen shut with infection.   He got an oral antibiotic and some ear drops and started feeling better in just a couple of days.

Later that day I threw a baby shower for one of the sisters I visit teach.  It was a fun shower and there were a lot of people who attended.  I fell into bed exhausted that night.

November 9, Nick took his Eagle project proposal to the review committee.  He was so nervous, but they loved his idea and he has approval to go ahead with his project.  Way to go, Nick!

Steve left the Eagle review meeting and headed straight to the church to take his HAM radio test.  He passed, of course, and now has his HAM radio license.  

November 10th was a fun day.  Sophie Miller came over and we spent the whole morning together baking cookies of her own creation - S'mores cookies.   They were super yummy.  Take any old chocolate chip cookie recipe and put chunks of graham crackers in the dough.  Bake them for about 5 minutes and them put mini marshmallows on top and finish baking them.  YUMMY!

Steve had his MRI for his shoulder to see why it was hurting so much.  Nick went on a scout campout that night and spent the evening getting ready for Naomi's birthday party the next day.  

November 11 Naomi had her Bob Ross birthday party.  We set up the living room with tarps on the floor (so happy accidents didn't get on the carpet) and tables and chairs with all that was needed to create a painting masterpiece.  We ate pizza, and painted and had birthday cake and played and...  The girls had a really good time.  Below are some pictures of the organized chaos.

November 12th, Fernanda came to do Naomi's official "Welcome to Young Women" visit.  Naomi is so excited to be out of primary and FINALLY into Young Women.  

November 13th - She is officially (FINALLY) twelve.  We had a family party for her.  Nick and Jeremy showered her with Slytherin stuff from Harry Potter and she got stroganoff for dinner.  She was one happy camper.

Steve got the results of the MRI back.  He has a rotator cuff tear with nerve impingement.  We are headed for surgery.  

November 14th was Naomi's first official Young Women activity.  I got an email reminding Naomi to bring a blind fold.  When I told her about the blindfold she said, "They are going to torture me on my first week!???  NICE!!"  That's my girl.

November 15th, Naomi got her Herbst appliance off today.  She is so happy to not have all that extra metal in her mouth.  

November 16th Jeremy got all registered for Spring semester and Nick got a new bed.  They are both growing up so fast.  

November 18th we spent the whole day getting Naomi's and Nick's rooms put together.  Nick all new bedroom furniture.  Naomi got his "old" dresser which we spruced up a little with some paint and it is perfect for her room.  She went from three small drawers to five much bigger drawers.  Everyone is happy.

November 21st we had a Turkey Shootout during seminary.  I set up turkeys and divided the kids into teams.  I would say one of the doctrinal mastery scriptures and the whole team would have to look it up.  The first team with everyone at the right place in the scriptures won and got a chance to shoot a turkey with an elastic gun.   The team with the most turkies shot won the shootout.  The kids really enjoyed it.

Out of all the kids in the school, Naomi's art was one of eighteen that was chosen to be on display at a local credit union.  She was so excited.  

November 22nd we got the rest of the house cleaned up in preparation for Bradden, Sunny and the kids.  They were coming to us for Thanksgiving this year since Jeremy had to work most of the weekend.  We were all so excited to spend some time with the cousins.  We spent the holiday making blanket forts in the living room, baking Hello Kitty cookies, seeing movies (girls to Cocoa and boys to Thor), going for walks, playing at the park and the pond, looking for golf balls, painting, eating and just having a good time.  Steve and Bradden went out on Black Friday, but didn't come back with much this year.   Jeremy had to work Thanksgiving Day from 7 p.m. to 4 a.m.  He said the mall was crazy!!!   It was a great holiday.  We were sad to see them leave, but all good things...

November 25th, Sunny and Bradden left to go home.  Nick went to Josh Hansen's birthday party and we all just kind of chilled.  

November 27th I subbed in the 5th grade for Mrs. Hammond.  Both Nick and Naomi had her.  The kids were working on a project that both my kids loved and I was familiar with so Mrs. Hammond felt good leaving them with me.   I could help them where needed. These kids are so creative.  

That night I got to pick Sandra up from the airport.  She had spent Thanksgiving with her family in Las Vegas.  She is always so full of stories when she gets back from family gatherings.  

November 28th and 29th I subbed for Mrs. Hammond.  These were fun days, but by the end of the third day I was really getting sick.  Immediately after school I put myself to bed.  I still had seminary to teach and couldn't be sick.  

November 30th I took Naomi for her well-child checkup.  The doctor was really pushing the Guardasil shot.  I had Naomi scheduled to have the shot a couple months back, but had a really bad feeling about it so I cancelled.  All the research I have done was inconclusive as to whether the shot was actually helpful.  Most of the stuff was about the serious side effects.  After praying about it I got a very strong feeling about not allowing them to give her this shot.  It was just too risky.  I am grateful that I did not have to make that decision on my own.
